Say what you will about M.I.A. and the annoyingly large amounts of airplay that “Paper Planes” has been getting lately, but she rolls with a pretty talented crew. Ever since the prospect of M.I.A. starting her record label “Zig Zag” (As she so nobly says, “Life is a zig and then you zag it”), artists affiliated with her have been coming out the woodwork. Two honorable mentions are Afrikan Boy and Rye Rye.
Afrikan Boy, a Nigerian rapper who currently resides in England, has been apart of M.I.A’s tour for a while now and has also been establishing himself as an artist to watch this year. His flow is messy and raw, while his wordplay is full of dry humor… As a result, fun ensues.
The other artist is Rye Rye, the 17 year old, speedy rapper who has gained popularity through her hit “Shake It To The Ground”, which was produced by B-More God, Blaqstarr. She’s currently working on a mixtape with Sinden as well as performing all over the world, click here for tour dates and here to peep her newest track, “Hardcore Girls”.
Keep on a look out for these two artists, in my opinion they both have the potential to be heavyweights in their respective sub-genres. Take a listen and hit me back!
Afrikan Boy – L.A.G.O.S.
Afrikan Boy – Lidl
Diplo + Rye Rye – Wassup
Rye Rye & M.I.A. – Tic Toc

Tic Toc is not an original track — it’s just them spitting over a Busy Signal instrumental…
